Heir to my rainbow

– A Poem by Bongani Kigundu

As the sun struggles to wake up,
the realisation hits me
that my life was always black and white.
Hues of grey
fog my eyes like cataracts,
and each morning I fight
to wipe the sleet from my eyes.
Darkness strangling me from inside,
I struggle to awake from my slumber.
Until,
you come along:
smile from a pot of gold,
birthed in red like the soil
of my motherland,
flowing deep in our veins.
Orange light setting me free and
untangling joy in each breath,
uncovering blinks of happiness.
Like the yellow sunrays
bathing your skin,
my past green with envy,
suddenly vibrant colours
set against your melanin
become more alive.
Blue calming waves of ecstasy,
cleansing,
I can see clearly
as your spark ignites
a love burning bright in me.
Shedding away my closed eyes
to what glee truly is,
I am drawn,
primal self to flame.
Could you be my meaning to life?
