1. COVID-19 has made us realize that the world’s most precious commodity is human life. We are learning that our genuine relationships matter.
2. Staying home means less money spent on transport/commuting, entertainment, eating out, etc. I hope you’re saving where you can!
3. The lockdown period means a lack of (or at least reduction) of FOMO. With most people staying home, the absence of anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere is a source of freedom!
4. The pandemic has made us more conscious and vocal about the inequalities which exist – highlighting the importance of generosity, consideration, and empathy.
5. The pandemic has fueled greater prioritization of water and sanitation – especially in areas where this was not prioritized.
Studies reveal that the pandemic has increased solidarity, translating into elevated Patriotism and Pan-Africanism. For example, doctors across the African continent are finding innovative ways to tackle the pandemic; young South Africans have found creative ways to address human rights challenges; we are also witnessing the budding of technological platforms to protect and empower gig workers whose employment has been threatened in this period.
With fewer cars and factories running, there is less burden on the environment which is great for sustainability!
The pandemic has exposed our shared fragility and vulnerability – regardless of your position in life, your status, power or popularity. Truly, we are all equals!
The pandemic has shed light on the real cracks in our social system. Perhaps this has crystallized for you the type of impact/contribution you want to make in society going forward.

When 2020 began, most of us had very high hopes. Little did we fathom that we would soon long for clarity and certainty, a “light at the end of the tunnel”. At this point, the tunnel appears with no end…
Without a doubt, the COVID-19 pandemic has induced many disturbances – from death to an economic downturn.
I was chatting recently to an older family member who was active in the apartheid struggle. She shared how back then you could at least identify the enemy with the physical eye. The Coronavirus is the invisible enemy – making it harder to defeat. Furthermore, one of the most frustrating things the pandemic has induced is uncertainty which fuels anxiety.
